You can also buy the rate down by paying "points" up front, which is just a way of saying you can pay up front to reduce your long term interest rate:

Generally speaking this blog isn’t about me, but my head’s a little swollen right now and, in my euphoria, I couldn’t resist posting a copy of an e-mail I received yesterday from a client. She gave me permission. Anyway, my client was transferred from Wenatchee to Portland, Oregon. I quickly sold her home at Fancher Heights in East Wenatchee and now she is trying to buy a home in the Portland area. Here are her thoughts on her current real estate buying experience:

This information may have been a little more timely late last year when we were experiencing that long cooold streak. But, I was reading a fireplace safety article in the Wenatchee World and thought you’d be interested. Here are the key points, but all are explained in more detail if you go to the article:
1. Use only dry, seasoned wood.
2. Burn the right kind of wood.
3. Have the chimney inspected.
4. Don’t think chimney-sweep logs will help.
5. Don’t try to clean your own chimney.
